Mythology Introduction

In the fall of humanity we have chosen an excess of experience over insight. As a consequence we have become blind to the inner spiritual worlds and almost obsessive about personal experience in the outer physical world. This imbalance results in inefficient soul growth because we make the same mistakes repeatedly instead of learning immediately from experience through insight. We have little waking consciousness in our inner spiritual nature. We feel a need for spiritual nourishment. Symbols have been introduced into culture as a temporary remedy to meet this need. Symbols are a gateway between the within and the without. Because symbols have one face in the outer physical world, we must be careful to not dwell on or idolize a symbol (which is a material thing), instead of focussing on the reality to which it points or we will have propagated materialism to another layer of manifestation, another layer of complication. As we unfold our spiritual potential we become evermore sophisticated and complicated. We often become complicated by doing everything that we can to avoid responsibility for our sins. Symbolism has evolved along with our complication. For example, sometimes we become inverted and see things opposite of the way they really are and symbols must accommodate our inversion. Consequently, some symbols are direct and some have a meaning opposite to what they seem to be on the surface. These two introductory talks discuss this and other problems of symbology and they lay the groundwork for how mythology will be treated in the following talks. Of course, they do this through the vehicle of myths.
